Russia Launches New Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile at Ukraine Near EU Border
January 9, 2026
Russia’s military said it fired its new hypersonic Oreshnik missile at a target in western Ukraine near the European Union border during a massive overnight strike. Ukraine confirmed the attack and reported damage to a critical infrastructure site in the Lviv region. Unverified social media reports suggested the site could be a large underground gas storage facility. Moscow claimed the missile launch was retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence last month, an allegation Kyiv and Washington reject as false.
Ukraine’s foreign minister warned the use of the Oreshnik missile so close to the EU and NATO border posed a “grave threat” to European security. Kyiv called Russia's justification “absurd.” The Oreshnik, named after the Russian word for hazel tree, was first used by Russia in November 2024. Analysts said the missile likely carried dummy warheads causing limited damage, indicating the launch was largely symbolic.
Russian forces also struck Kyiv overnight, hitting multiple districts and causing at least one death. Five rescue workers were injured while responding, according to Ukraine's security service.
Days earlier, Ukraine’s European allies agreed to offer postwar security guarantees if a ceasefire with Russia is reached. Britain and France said they are ready to deploy troops to Ukraine after a peace agreement. Russia's foreign ministry rejected this, calling it a “direct threat.”
President Putin claims the Oreshnik missile is impossible to intercept due to its speed exceeding 10 times the sound barrier. He also says its power rivals a nuclear weapon, even with conventional warheads. Western analysts are skeptical, but Ukraine currently lacks defenses against the missile.
