Karnataka Govt Sends Hubballi Disrobing and Ballari Firing Cases to CID Probe
January 10, 2026
The Karnataka government on Friday handed over 10 cases from two major incidents to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The cases involve the Hubballi woman 'disrobing' controversy and the Ballari firing incident where a Congress worker was killed. These incidents became political flashpoints since both involve BJP and Congress members.
Home Minister G. Parameshwara said the Hubballi cases were transferred to CID after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approved. The probe will be led by B.K. Singh, Additional Director-General of Police. Another four cases linked to the Ballari firing were also given to CID, with an officer yet to be appointed for that.
In the Hubballi case, a viral video showed a woman, reportedly a BJP worker, allegedly being disrobed on January 5. There are six cases in total: four against BJP worker Sujata Handi and her family for assault and attempted murder, one against Congress councillor Suvarna Kallakuntla, and one related to the viral video release.
Complaints against Sujata Handi include assault and attempted murder by local residents and a police constable injured during her arrest. The complaint against Kallakuntla came after a BJP protest and a complaint by Handi's brother. Home Minister Parameshwara clarified, "I have already told you that the police did not strip her and that she did it herself. However, a detailed investigation is required to clearly ascertain the facts."
The Ballari case stems from a clash during the erection of banners before a Valmiki statue unveiling. A Congress worker was killed in this fight. Police arrested 26 people connected to six related cases. Firearms used by private security personnel were seized and sent for forensic tests. A private gunman linked to Sathish Reddy, close to MLA Nara Bharath Reddy, is in judicial custody.
The BJP, including former Minister and mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy, demands MLA Bharath Reddy’s arrest. The investigations are ongoing as political tensions continue to rise.
