January 10, 2026
Makrand Narwekar, younger brother of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, is the richest candidate in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election. He filed an affidavit showing assets of ₹124.4 crore. Narwekar seeks a third term from ward no 226 on a BJP ticket. His wealth rose by a huge 1,868% compared to nine years ago, including 27 farmland parcels in Alibaug bought between October 2022 and November 2025. He owns a flat in South Mumbai's Colaba worth ₹7.99 crore. Of his assets, ₹92.32 crore are immovable and ₹32.14 crore movable. He is also owed ₹30.11 crore by family and others. His liabilities total ₹16.68 crore from loans and borrowings. Narwekar, 47, states his profession as "advocate." Opponents like Tejal Pawar, his only rival in ward 226, claim pressure is being put on them to quit the race. His brother Rahul Narwekar faced accusations of meddling in BMC nominations, which he called "baseless" and politically motivated. Samadhan Sarvankar and Shraddha Jadhav follow as other high net worth candidates with assets over ₹46 crore each. The BMC elections feature tough fights between BJP-Shinde Sena and Thackeray Sena-MNS alliances.
