The Tamil Nadu government has decided to add two more State Information Commissioners to the Tamil Nadu Information Commission. Currently, apart from the State Chief Information Commissioner, there are six information commissioners. After the new appointments, the total number will rise to eight. When the Commission was formed in 2005, the state appointed one Chief and two Information Commissioners. In 2008, this number was increased from two to six. Now, due to the rising number of RTI appeals, the government feels the need to boost the commission further. At present, the commission has one Chief Information Commissioner and five State Information Commissioners. According to Section 15(2) of the Right to Information Act, 2005, the State Information Commission can have one Chief and up to ten Information Commissioners if needed. The Chief Information Commissioner and other commissioners are appointed by the Governor. The nominations are made by a committee headed by the Chief Minister, which includes the Leader of Opposition and a Cabinet Minister chosen by the CM. This expansion aims to quicken the processing of appeals and strengthen the RTI mechanism in Tamil Nadu.
