Syrian forces detain 300 Kurds, evacuate 400 fighters after Aleppo clashes; US hits Islamic State
January 11, 2026
Syrian government forces have detained 300 Kurds and evacuated over 400 Kurdish fighters from Aleppo amid violent clashes, the interior ministry announced. An official told Agence France-Presse that about 360 Kurdish fighters and 60 wounded were moved by buses to the Kurdish-controlled north-east from Sheikh Maqsoud, Aleppo's last Kurdish district captured by the army. Another 300 Kurds, including internal security members, were detained on Sunday. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said they agreed to withdraw under a ceasefire after days of fighting. Kurdish fighters had controlled parts of Aleppo and large areas in northern Syria under a de facto autonomous administration amid the civil war. The clashes, some of the fiercest since Bashar al-Assad’s regime was ousted in December 2024, began after talks to integrate Kurds into the new government failed. This violence has escalated tensions in Syria, where President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s plan to unify the country under one leadership faces Kurdish resistance. Turkey, an ally of the new Syrian government, has warned it might intervene. Israel supports Kurdish forces. At least 21 civilians died, and 155,000 people fled their homes during the conflict. Both sides blame each other for starting the fights. On Saturday, US and allied forces launched "large-scale" strikes against Islamic State (IS) targets across Syria. These strikes followed a deadly IS attack in Palmyra on 13 December that killed two US soldiers and a US civilian interpreter. US Central Command said the strikes were part of Operation Hawkeye Strike to respond to that attack. Jordan’s army also took part, cooperating with the international coalition to stop terrorist groups from regrouping. Palmyra, known for its ancient ruins, was once held by jihadist fighters. The US personnel targeted in the Palmyra attack support Operation Inherent Resolve to combat IS. Despite IS being mostly defeated, the group still operates in Syria’s desert areas. Syria’s military confirmed it completed operations in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud district. State media reported the last Kurdish-led fighters left Aleppo Sunday after the ceasefire deal allowed evacuations. The SDF said they reached the ceasefire through international mediation to protect civilians and fighters. The US and EU called for renewed political talks. US envoy Tom Barrack met with President al-Sharaa in Damascus, urging immediate peace talks and restraint. He said the US secretary of state Marco Rubio’s team is ready to mediate further.
