Wildfires Rage in Stanford, South Africa; Residents Evacuated Amid Thick Smoke and Strong Winds
January 11, 2026
Stanford and Pearly Beach in South Africa’s Western Cape are facing severe wildfires. On Saturday, authorities warned residents and tourists to prepare for evacuation. Thick smoke and strong winds are making it hard for firefighters to control the fires. The Stanford fire threatens homes in Thembelihle township. About 120 people were moved safely from the Die Kop informal settlement. Local officials urge everyone to leave before conditions worsen. Dean O’Neill, Overstrand municipal manager, said, “Roads are being closed to prevent motorists from getting stuck. Conditions can change fast. It’s better to be safe than sorry,” according to Times Live. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Cape Town’s fire and rescue service, shared that helicopters are waterbombing the flames. Firefighters also watch fires in Mossel Bay, where a three-day fire is now contained, and in the Cape Winelands districts—Franschhoek, Stormsvlei, and Worcester. The South African Tourism Services Association (Satsa) noted that fires are usual this time of year but advised extra caution. Some travel plans are affected due to restrictions on outdoor activities and road closures. Tourists are warned to follow official safety advice and avoid fire zones. Local SPCA teams reported many wildlife deaths, with some animals found as skeletons after being caught by fires. The filming of Love Island: All Stars has been paused after the wildfires forced the villa’s evacuation.
