Gas Cylinder Explosion Kills Newlywed Couple and Six Others in Islamabad
January 11, 2026
A tragic gas explosion in Islamabad killed a newly-married couple and six others on Sunday morning. The blast happened around 07:00 local time in a house where the couple and guests were sleeping after their wedding party. The explosion caused the roof to collapse and several walls to break apart. Rescue workers carried injured people from under heavy rubble. The gas leak filled the room before exploding. The father of the groom, Hanif Masih, said, "My son had been married the previous day. We all went to bed around 03:00 and woke up to devastation." His son, daughter-in-law, wife, and sister-in-law all died in the blast. Three nearby houses were also damaged. Police have sealed the area and started an investigation. Deputy police commissioner Sahibzada Yousaf said sniffer dogs and advanced tools helped in rescue operations. Pakistan Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani called the incident "heart-wrenching" and warned about the unsafe use of gas cylinders. He said, "Such incidents demand that relevant departments fulfil their responsibilities seriously and ensure safety measures." Many homes in Pakistan use gas cylinders for cooking, but leaks have caused deadly accidents before.
