16-Year-Old Dies in Accidental Firing Amid VDG Training in Jammu & Kashmir

In Jammu & Kashmir, a tragic accident occurred as a young family member of a Village Defence Guard (VDG) died in an accidental firing in Kishtwar district. Anuj Kumar, 16, son of VDG member Pyare Lal from Loyee Dhar village, was hit by a bullet on Saturday evening around 9:30 p.m. Mr. Lal was reportedly cleaning his automatic rifle when it went off accidentally. Anuj Kumar, a Class 10 student, was rushed for a post-mortem, and police officials seized the weapon. An inquest is ongoing to understand the exact circumstances.
Meanwhile, training of VDG volunteers continues in the region. Around 140-150 VDG members from Jhullas village in Poonch district were briefed on operational issues and weapon handling by police officials. Authorities emphasized the vital role of these volunteers as first responders to any terrorist threats in border villages. Vigilance, timely reporting, and quick action were stressed to safeguard lives and property.
The Jammu & Kashmir Police praised the dedication and courage shown by VDG members. They assured continued support through training, guidance, and logistical help to strengthen security along border areas. Strengthening the Village Defence Guards remains a top priority in the region’s security framework.
