China announced on Monday that it has reached a deal with the European Union regarding exports of Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) to the EU market. Beijing's commerce ministry stated that the EU will issue guidelines on minimum pricing for Chinese auto exporters. The ministry did not clarify whether this agreement ends the tariffs of up to 35.3 percent imposed by the EU on Chinese EV imports in 2024. These tariffs came after an EU investigation that found Chinese automakers received unfair government subsidies. The expansion of Chinese electric vehicle makers into Europe has raised concerns among European and American car manufacturers. In response, the US also imposed a 100 percent tariff on Chinese electric cars in 2024. This deal signals ongoing negotiations amid trade tensions surrounding the growing presence of affordable Chinese electric vehicles in global markets.
