The election for the Vizhinjam ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation was held on Monday, January 12, 2025. This election was postponed earlier due to the death of an Independent candidate. According to the State Election Commission, 8,912 out of 13,307 voters cast their votes, marking a 66.97% turnout. The results will be announced on Tuesday, January 13. Though the result may not significantly change the power balance in the civic body, it holds importance for the three main political fronts. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to secure a simple majority of 51 seats in the 101-ward Corporation if it wins here. This would free the BJP from relying on Independent councillor M. Radhakrishnan, who has recently been in dispute with the party over a standing committee chairperson post. Chairperson elections are scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, a day after the Vizhinjam result. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), which have previously won this ward, look to improve their current tallies of 29 and 19 seats respectively. The election happens amid confusion in BJP over the makeup of eight standing committees. The LDF had aimed to win even the less significant tax appeal committee by nominating many councillors. To block this, BJP nominated more councillors to the committee, reducing quorum in other committees. On January 7, only three of the eight standing committees could be formed due to a shortage of councillors. To maintain control, BJP made two councillors resign from the tax appeal committee and nominate themselves in health and public works committees. This move left two vacancies in the tax appeal committee, which must be reported to the State Election Commission.
