Kozhikode DTPC Fires Workers Over Sewage Dumping Near Butt Road Beach Park
January 12, 2026
The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in Kozhikode has fired the workers responsible for dumping sewage near Butt Road beach park. On Sunday morning, waste from a toilet block managed by DTPC was poured directly onto the nearby Varakkal beach. This toilet facility had been leaking sewage for the past two months, causing overflow into surrounding areas. According to Nandulal Malakkal, destination manager at DTPC Kozhikode, “The workers at the site were issued show-cause notices, and their contract was terminated, and a new contract replacing the workers will be issued.” He added, “Following sacrificial rituals, sand carried into the restrooms by the pilgrims has led to frequent pipe blockages, and we are working urgently to clear the system and expect to restore full service immediately.” Temple representatives who conduct the rituals found the workers dumping wastewater on the beach and alerted police. Fire and Rescue Services staff and local people cleaned the sewage that spilled over the park’s walkways and disinfected the area to restore hygiene. The Vellayil police have registered a case. Machinery was used to remove contaminated ground sections completely. Due to sanitation concerns, the Health department ordered the closure of nearby food stalls and Tourism department hotels until Sunday evening. The incident occurred near a popular evening gathering spot.
