VTU Launches Mobile App to Stop Fake Activity Points in Engineering
January 12, 2026
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has developed a new mobile app called Activity Point Tracking System (APTS) to stop students from cheating on activity points. Engineering students must now download APTS and upload geo-tagged photos as proof of their extra curricular activities. These points help students earn their degree under AICTE rules.
Since 2018-19, AICTE requires engineering students to earn at least 75 out of 100 activity points during their course. These activities improve skills like leadership, entrepreneurship, and social commitment. Examples include making business proposals for village income, water management, promoting tourism, saving energy, digital transactions, and supporting women’s social and economic issues.
Earlier, some students submitted fake documents without participating. "According to the AICTE rules, students must earn activity points through their extra curricular activities. However, some students misused this by submitting fake documents and photographs. To prevent such unethical practices, we decided to use the technology and curb it. We successfully tested the app, and it will be launched soon," said S. Vidyashankar, Vice-Chancellor, VTU.
The APTS app, developed with Youth for Seva and Life Cycle Sports Pvt. Ltd., requires students to enter full activity details, upload geo-tagged photos, and a certificate from the organization or school. The app also records how many hours students spend on activities. This move aims to keep the process honest and transparent.
