Telangana Rushes to Shift Govt Offices by Jan 31 Deadline Amid AP Building Dispute
January 13, 2026
The Telangana Government is rushing to relocate its offices from rented spaces to government buildings before the January 31, 2026 deadline. Around 60 offices in Hyderabad still operate from private premises. Officials say most can be moved by the deadline. However, some offices like Excise department SHOs and Sub-Registrar Offices in districts remain in rented properties as permanent buildings are not yet ready. The same applies to Anganwadi centres and ANM sub-centres in villages without government infrastructure. The government spent nearly ₹300 crore on rent in 2023-24 and ₹198.92 crore in 2024-25 for various offices across the state. An additional ₹450 crore in rent is recorded for offices in twin cities, mostly as book adjustments since tenants and owners belong to government departments or PSUs. Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao has instructed department heads to take over buildings vacated by Andhra Pradesh. He has asked officials for urgent status reports on these takeovers. However, Andhra Pradesh has not fully left office buildings allotted during the common capital period. Key premises like Lake View Guest House and Hermitage Buildings remain locked or staffed only minimally. Telangana’s effort to shift offices hinges on getting clear control of these disputed properties before the deadline.
