Over 2,000 Killed in Iran Protests as Trump Promises Help
January 14, 2026
More than 2,000 people have died during protests in Iran, a human rights group said. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) confirmed 1,850 protesters, 135 government affiliates, nine civilians, and nine children killed over 17 days despite an internet blackout. An Iranian official put the death toll at 2,000 but blamed "terrorists." Protesters are angry over Iran's currency collapse and rising living costs. The unrest has spread to 180 cities across all 31 provinces. Authorities used deadly force and cut internet access to control the protests.
HRANA said it is investigating 779 more deaths and called their figures conservative. Another group, Iran Human Rights, confirmed at least 734 protester deaths and said the real number is likely much higher. Videos show many bodies at Tehran's Kahrizak Forensic Centre, with hospitals overwhelmed.
President Trump tweeted: "Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING - TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!" He warned Iranian authorities they would "pay a big price" and said, "HELP IS ON ITS WAY." The US is considering military and covert options to respond. Trump canceled talks with Iranian officials over the killings.
Iran says it is ready for diplomacy but warns the US not to test military options. Iran claims foreign-backed "terrorists" infiltrated protests. Supreme Leader Khamenei says foreign enemies are behind the unrest.
Internationally, the UK summoned Iran's ambassador to protest the killings. The UN human rights chief called for an immediate end to violence and internet restrictions. Thousands have been arrested, and some protesters face the death penalty after rapid trials. Trump promised "very strong action" if Iran executes protesters.
The crackdown remains fierce with security checkpoints and searches across cities. New videos show clashes and protesters chanting slogans against Iran's leadership. The unrest is one of the worst challenges to Iran's government since 1979.
