Exiled Underworld Boss Kazem Hamad Arrested in Iraq for Drug Trafficking
January 14, 2026
Kazem “Kaz” Hamad, an exiled underworld boss tied to ongoing tobacco wars in Victoria, Australia, has been arrested in Iraq. Iraqi officials detained Hamad on Monday based on requests from Australian law enforcement. The Iraq National Centre for International Judicial Cooperation called Hamad “one of the most dangerous wanted men in the world.” Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, describing the suspect as a “number one target” and “national security threat.” Barrett said the AFP had intensified efforts, including overseas intelligence and cooperation, to locate Hamad. She added that Iraqi authorities independently decided to arrest him after their own investigations. Barrett mentioned that late last year the AFP provided Iraq with crucial information that led to the arrest. In an October speech, Barrett revealed her top priority was an individual linked to several tobacco-related arson attacks and a politically motivated synagogue fire. She stated, “That person is a national security threat to this country.” Multiple Australian sources link Hamad to Victoria’s violent underworld feud over tobacco shops, involving outlaw motorcycle gangs and Middle Eastern crime groups. The Victoria Police formed Taskforce Lunar last October targeting tobacco crime. Victoria Police Chief Mike Bush praised the arrest and pledged ongoing cooperation with Australian and international agencies. Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan acknowledged police efforts but declined detailed comments due to court proceedings. The Iraqi statement identified the suspect as “Kadhim Malik Hamad Rabah al-Hajami,” arrested after Supreme Judicial Council approval. The statement accused Hamad of importing drugs into Iraq and Australia, smuggling heroin, and involvement with violent organised crime gangs in Sydney. Iraqi officials say these gangs commit shootings, murders, kidnappings, extortion, arson, and drug trafficking internationally. The arrest marks a significant blow to a serious criminal enterprise linked to Australia’s organised crime scene.
