Femella Foundation, a student-run NGO in Thiruvananthapuram, is launching a new fight against domestic violence through a play called 'Yagnaseni'. The name means 'born from sacrificial fire' and refers to Draupadi from the Mahabharata. The play connects the ancient story of Draupadi's disrobing with modern cases of domestic violence. Alu Krishna, project head and Executive Director of Femella, says, "The narrative begins with the disrobing of Draupadi in the Mahabharata, and looks at present-day Draupadis." 'Yagnaseni' will be performed at Bharat Bhavan, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram on January 19 at 8.30 pm. Entry is free. Femella Foundation was started two years ago and recently added ending domestic violence to its goals. The group plans awareness sessions in schools and colleges. "We didn’t want to launch it the usual way. Hence the play," said Alu. Amrita Leksmi R, joint director and project head, said, "When someone is a victim, outrage follows but then fades away. We want to stop this violence from passing to the next generation. That’s why we include school sessions." Femella began as a social startup from an Ideathon project by Alu Krishna. It now has 8 core members and 20 volunteers. They run awareness campaigns and digital programs. Another project, 'Beyond the Blurb', is a reading group with 150+ members who meet monthly to discuss books. Alka Ajith, convenor, said, "It’s a peaceful space for readers from all walks of life." Femella also plans to start a financial literacy project for students this year. The NGO faced challenges finding venues and support. Alka said, "Many schools and colleges denied us because we are student-run." Amrita added, "We faced many rejections over our serious topic." Despite this, the team persevered. Their message against domestic violence will reach the stage on January 19 at Bharat Bhavan, Thycaud, at 8.30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend free of cost.
