Supreme Court to Decide on Passive Euthanasia for Man on Life Support After 13 Years
January 14, 2026
The Supreme Court is set to pass a final order on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in a plea for passive euthanasia for 31-year-old Harish Rana. Harish has been on artificial life support for over 13 years after a severe head injury and 100% quadriplegic disability. The judges personally met his parents and siblings, who strongly expressed their wish that he should not suffer any longer. "All the three, i.e., the father, mother and younger brother, in one voice and with a lot of pain in their hearts, made a fervent appeal before us to take necessary steps to ensure that Harish [Rana] does not suffer any more... According to them, if the medical treatment is not making any difference, then there is no point in continuing with such medical treatment and making Harish suffer for no good reason," the court said in a 12-page order released on January 14. Doctors from primary and secondary medical boards also recommended stopping treatment and allowing "nature to take its own course," as reported by Additional Solicitor-General Aishwarya Bhati. The court noted that medical experts believe Harish will remain in a permanent vegetative state (PVS) indefinitely and will never recover or live a normal life. Harish suffered the injury in 2013 when he fell from the fourth floor of his accommodation as a Panjab University student. His family moved homes to ensure faster medical emergency access. His father, Ashok Rana, told the legal team they had done everything possible but worry about who will care for Harish as they age. His mother, Nirmala Rana, said she feels more pain watching her son suffer than at the thought of his death. Harish’s brother and sister also expressed that ongoing treatment is only extending his agony. The family has faced great challenges in daily care despite government help. The court met with the family on January 13 to discuss the case in detail and is expected to announce its decision soon.
