A 23-year-old woman, Amita Reddy, was arrested by Sanathnagar police on Monday evening for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a 60-year-old woman. Amita, from Borabanda and originally from Warangal, is an engineering graduate who once worked in Chennai before quitting. Police said she tried to steal the chain to help her husband, Rajesh, deal with his financial troubles. Inspector K. Srinivasulu shared that the incident happened in Avanthi Nagar Thota Colony. The victim was entering the apartment lift when Amita tried to yank the chain as the lift doors were closing. The victim resisted and shouted for help. A security guard came immediately, and police were called. Amita was caught on the spot. Police learned Amita married Rajesh two years ago, and they have a one-year-old daughter. Rajesh had worked in finance but stopped working and owes nearly ₹5 lakh. Police believe the financial pressure made Amita attempt the snatching to get quick cash. The victim, who lives in Miyapur, had visited her apartment to collect rent. Amita noticed the gold chain and targeted her. A case is registered, and investigation is ongoing.
