January 15, 2026
A severe thunderstorm hit Victoria's southwest coast on Thursday, dumping more than 170mm of rain and causing flash flooding. Emergency warnings were issued for the Wye, Kennett, and Cumberland rivers in the Lorne area. The Great Ocean Road was shut in both directions from Skenes Creek Rd to Hird St in Lorne. Only emergency services can pass. Dramatic footage shows a 4WD being swept away by a strong current while spectators watched from safe ground. The local Foodworks grocery store closed due to flooding and asked people to avoid the area. The Bureau of Meteorology warned at midday about severe thunderstorms with heavy rain expected to cause flash flooding. At Mount Crowley, over 175mm of rain was recorded in six hours until 3pm. The Lorne Community House opened to help those seeking shelter from the storm. Authorities continue to urge people in affected areas to find safe shelter.
