Maharashtra Municipal Elections See 54.77% Voter Turnout; BJP Leads With 72 BMC Seats

The State Election Commission (SEC) of Maharashtra announced a 54.77% voter turnout in the elections held for 29 municipal corporations on January 15, 2026. The highest turnout was in Ichalkaranji at 69.76%, and the lowest in Mira Bhayandar at 48.64%. Among major cities, Mumbai had 52.94%, Thane 55.59%, Nashik 56.67%, Pune 52.42%, and Nagpur 51.38%. Other notable turnouts include Navi Mumbai at 57.15%, Nanded Waghala at 61.37%, Parbhani at 65.99%, and Kolhapur at 66.53%. Counting of votes began on January 16. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leads with 72 seats. Shiv Sena (UBT) holds 60 seats, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) 25 seats, Congress 19 seats, AIMIM 7 seats, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena 5 seats, Nationalist Congress Party 3 seats, Samajwadi Party 2 seats, and others fill the remaining seats. AIMIM won five seats in Govandi and one in Chittanagar. The SEC also announced 65 candidates were elected unopposed across 10 civic bodies, mostly from BJP and Shinde’s Shiv Sena. Certificates for these winners are set to be issued on January 16.
