European Leaders Reject Trump's Tariff Threat Over Greenland Takeover
January 18, 2026
President Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from eight allies from February 1, rising to 25% by June. This targets Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland. The tariffs are a response to opposition to his plan to buy Greenland, a Danish territory. Trump sees Greenland as vital to US security and has not ruled out using force.
European leaders reacted strongly. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, "Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of Nato allies is completely wrong." French President Emmanuel Macron called the threat "unacceptable" and said, "We will not be swayed by any intimidation." Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson declared, "We won't let ourselves be blackmailed."
Thousands protested in Greenland and Denmark. In Copenhagen, placards read "Hands Off Greenland" and "Greenland for Greenlanders." Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen joined demonstrators who stated, "Greenland is not for sale" and "we shape our future." These protests came before the tariff announcement.
Trump said these countries are playing "a very dangerous game" and stated, "Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet" were at stake. Atlantic allies have sent a small troop group to Greenland for reconnaissance. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called Trump's tariff threat "a surprise."
Despite talks between US and Danish officials to set up a working group on Greenland’s future, Trump’s tariff move escalates tensions. Opinion polls show 85% of Greenlanders oppose US takeover plans. US Democratic Senator Chris Coons called Trump's rhetoric "not constructive" during a visit to Copenhagen by a US Congress delegation.
European Council President Antonio Costa vowed, "The European Union will always be very firm in defending international law, which begins within the territory of the member states of the European Union." The dispute highlights growing friction in NATO and transatlantic relations over Arctic security and Greenland’s status.
