NSW Storms Trigger 1,400+ Emergency Calls, Evacuation on Sydney’s Northern Beaches
January 18, 2026
New South Wales has been hit hard by intense storms, prompting more than 1,400 calls to emergency services and 20 flood rescue requests, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) reported. Sydney and nearby regions like Illawarra and Hunter are the worst affected by flash floods and storm damage. SES assistant commissioner Sonya Alston told ABC News that rapid rising waters led to an evacuation in Narrabeen. "We did have an evacuation at Narrabeen overnight due to the rapid rising waters there and the localised heavy rainfall," she said. The storm system is moving north, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and gusts to northeastern NSW. Residents are urged to monitor the BoM and Hazards Near Me apps and avoid entering flood waters. Sydney’s northern beaches faced an emergency evacuation Sunday morning, especially at Narrabeen Lagoon. More than a dozen people have been rescued across Sydney, with homes flooded and cars submerged. At Great Mackerel Beach, a landslide damaged multiple homes and injured a woman. Tragically, the storm claimed a woman’s life on Saturday when a tree branch fell on her car at Macquarie Pass; a man in the front seat had minor injuries. Senior meteorologist Edward Townsend-Medlock warned more heavy rain was expected from Sydney’s northern suburbs up to the Hunter coast Sunday morning, with severe thunderstorms possible. The SES has logged over 800 calls just after the latest heavy rains. Authorities advise residents to stay indoors if possible and exercise caution as the storm moves north through early next week.
