At Least 39 Dead in High-Speed Train Crash Near Adamuz, Spain; Rescue Continues
January 19, 2026
A deadly high-speed train crash happened near Adamuz, Córdoba province, Spain on Sunday evening. At least 39 people died and rescue work continues. The crash involved two trains. The first was an Iryo train with about 300 passengers, traveling from Málaga to Madrid. It derailed at 7:45 pm local time and hit a Renfe train coming from Madrid to Huelva. The second train also derailed and went down an embankment. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the cause is still unknown. He called it “really strange” that the derailment happened on a straight stretch of track that was renewed in May. Most of the victims were in the first two carriages of the second train. A journalist traveling on one of the trains said the impact felt like an earthquake. Passengers used emergency hammers to break windows and escape. A passenger named Carmen said on X that the train shook violently ten minutes after leaving Córdoba, then the lights went out. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences on X and said he will visit the crash site. He wrote, "Tonight is a night of deep pain for our country due to the tragic railway accident in Adamuz." Andalusia regional President Juanma Moreno said 75 injured passengers were sent to hospitals. Rescue teams are working round the clock to help survivors. The death toll may rise as work continues, said Minister Puente.
