Denmark Protests Trump’s Greenland Plans With 'Make America Go Away' MAGA Caps
January 20, 2026
Protesters in Denmark are mocking US President Donald Trump’s plans to buy Greenland. They wear red caps like Trump’s MAGA hats but with the slogan “Make America Go Away.” These hats have become a popular symbol of resistance against Trump’s push for Greenland.
The slogan parodies Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” phrase. People showed up with the caps at a recent protest in the cold Danish capital to voice their rejection of Trump’s Arctic move.
Many European countries have also spoken against US plans, warning that threatening Greenland could harm Western security. But protesters are direct. Lars Hermansen, a 76-year-old from Copenhagen, told ABC News, “I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States.”
The caps were created by Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, who owns a vintage clothing store in Copenhagen. At first, sales were slow, but things changed when Trump’s Greenland push grew louder. Tonnesen said, “When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realize this probably wasn’t a joke -- it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality.”
He added, “So I said, OK, what can I do? Can I communicate in a funny way with a good message and unite the Danes to show that Danish people support the people of Greenland?” Demand jumped instantly, and he ordered thousands more hats.
The first cap Tonnesen designed had a wordplay slogan, “Nu det NUUK!” which twists the Danish phrase for “Now it’s enough,” replacing the words with Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
At the protest, people waved red-and-white Danish and Greenlandic flags and held signs mocking US claims on Greenland, an island larger than Saudi Arabia. The hats and protests highlight rising local anger over Trump’s Arctic plans.
