Kurdish-led Forces Exit IS Camp Amid Clashes and Prison Breaks in Syria
January 20, 2026
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have pulled out of the al-Hol camp that houses thousands linked to the Islamic State (IS). This happened during ongoing clashes with Syrian government forces, despite an agreed ceasefire. The SDF said it was "compelled to withdraw" due to "international indifference toward the issue of [IS]" and moved to other northern Syrian cities. The Syrian interior ministry condemned the move, calling it uncoordinated with government or US-led coalition forces. Nearby, suspected IS fighters escaped from the SDF-run Shaddadi prison amid the fighting. The interior ministry reported 120 detainees fled on Monday, with 81 re-arrested by soldiers and police. The SDF claimed government forces had freed 1,500 detainees after it lost control of the prison. Additionally, the al-Aqtan prison near Raqqa suffered shelling and lost its water supply. On Sunday, the SDF agreed to hand over control of the Kurdish autonomous region in the northeast, including prisons and camps, to the Syrian government. This deal aimed to end nearly two weeks of fighting. It also involved the SDF withdrawing tens of thousands of fighters from Raqqa and Deir al-Zour to Hassakeh, integrating them into official defence and interior forces. This marks a major loss of autonomy for the SDF, which gained control for Syria's Kurdish minority during the fight against IS. President Ahmed al-Sharaa seeks to reunify Syria after leading the 2024 rebel offensive, but the country remains fragmented with ongoing sectarian conflicts.
