January 21, 2026
A Rodalies commuter train derailed near Barcelona on Tuesday evening, killing the driver and injuring at least 14 people, local media report. The train collided with a retaining wall, which had fallen onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní during heavy storms in north-eastern Spain. Emergency services arrived with 11 ambulances and 35 fire crews. They rescued a passenger trapped inside the train and are assessing the injuries. Some injured passengers were taken to Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca hospitals. Gelida is about 35 km west of Barcelona. Coastal areas of Spain remain on high alert due to fierce weather, including snowstorms in the Pyrenees and strong waves near Menorca. This crash follows a major rail accident two days ago in Andalusia, where 42 people died after two high-speed trains collided.
