India Tourism and Industrial Fair in Chennai Turns 50: A Festival of Colours and Memories
January 21, 2026
The India Tourism and Industrial Fair at Island Grounds in Chennai recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The fair began in 1974 as the 'Pongal Tourist Trade Fair' and was later renamed by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in 1989. Known for its bright lights, colours, and lively atmosphere, this 70-day fair has been a favourite spot for families. Visitors recall enjoying soft sand walks, sea breezes, big pappads, and chilli bajjis while exploring stalls. Resident K.C. Indhirani shared memories of buying kitchen gadgets and riding the toy train. The fair featured a mix of government stalls, including religious, tourism, and industrial departments, and shoppers could find affordable clothes, toys, and food from across India. Special attractions included horticulture shows, dog shows, and entertainments by film stars. Challenges included a 1982 fire that destroyed several pavilions. Today, the fair has 43 government stalls, a giant wheel, a 3D children’s show, and special bus services. Former officials praise its educational themes, showcasing Tamil Nadu’s growth and culture. The fair remains a vibrant celebration of trade, tourism, and fun in Chennai.
