UAE to Extend Paid Maternity Leave to 95 Days for Government Employees
January 21, 2026
The UAE is moving to increase paid maternity leave for government workers to 95 days. This was discussed in the Federal National Council (FNC) to support family-friendly workplace rules. Currently, private-sector women get 60 days leave under UAE Labour Law—45 days fully paid and 15 days half paid. Lawmakers want 98 days of paid leave to match global standards and better work-life balance. Abu Dhabi already offers up to 90 days for private sector Emirati women.
Along with longer leave, the FNC urges flexible and remote work policies for mothers with children under 12, caregivers of elderly, and people with disabilities. They want clear job classifications for flexible work and timelines to approve requests.
Lawmakers also highlighted new domestic abuse laws under Federal Law No. 13 of 2024. It clearly defines abuse types and sets penalties up to Dh50,000 fines and imprisonment. Failure to report abuse can lead to fines of Dh5,000 to Dh10,000. Support services like counseling and shelters are also emphasized.
The proposal to extend maternity leave currently targets federal government employees only. No private sector changes have been decided yet, which still follows the UAE Labour Law guidelines. Lawmakers say supporting mothers with longer leave improves productivity and helps families stay stable. The new abuse laws aim to protect victims and keep families safe. Together, these reforms reflect the UAE’s goal of becoming a highly family-friendly and human-focused society by 2026.
