NIA court in Kolkata gives 10-year jail to man in LeT recruitment case

On January 21, 2026, a Special NIA Court in Kolkata sentenced Sayyad M. Idris from Karnataka to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. He was convicted for his role in a Pakistan-backed plot to recruit and radicalise Muslim youths in West Bengal for the banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Along with the prison sentence, Idris was fined ₹70,000, according to National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials. The NIA took over the probe from West Bengal Police in April 2020. Idris was arrested along with another suspect. Earlier, in March 2020, the West Bengal Police arrested another LeT operative, Tania Parvin, from North 24 Parganas and recovered secessionist materials urging Muslim youths towards 'jihad' against India. Trials for other accused are ongoing, the NIA said.
