Man Caught Overspeeding in BC in Car Held by Garden Latch, Faces Heavy Penalties
January 23, 2026
A 22-year-old man in British Columbia, Canada was caught overspeeding in a car held together by a garden door latch. The police did not disclose the man’s name but shared a photo of the car, giving the driver “10 on creativity and a 0 for legality.” The grey Acura was driving at 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Christina Lake when stopped by police.
The man received a ticket for excessive speed, tow truck costs, and a seven-day vehicle impound at his expense. He also faces high-risk driver insurance premiums for at least three years. Additionally, the vehicle must be removed from the road until all defects are fixed and it passes inspection.
Corporal Michael McLaughlin from BC Highway Patrol expressed surprise that the car held together at such high speed. He said, “It’s amazing that this particular car could go that fast without disintegrating.” The car had dents hammered out and spray paint repairs but was not roadworthy. McLaughlin added, "It looked like it had been chewed up by Robosaurus."
The vehicle’s rear window was missing and replaced with rebar and duct tape, and the driver’s door was locked using a welded latch. Corporal McLaughlin warned, "Any time you modify an essential component of your vehicle including door locks, windows, steering, brakes, or suspension, you need to get that vehicle inspected. And if you’re driving in a vehicle that’s obviously not roadworthy, you probably shouldn't speed. Police can’t ignore that."
This was not the first time police found vehicles held together with duct tape and odd fixes, but using a garden latch to secure a car door was rare. The car has now been confiscated and the man faces penalties for his actions.
