Youth Congress and BJP Protest Sabarimala Gold Loss; Police Use Tear Gas, Water Cannons
January 23, 2026
On Thursday, youth wings of Congress and BJP protested in Kerala's capital and Thrissur over the Sabarimala gold loss. In Thiruvananthapuram, Youth Congress marchers demanded action on the alleged gold misappropriation from the Ayyappa temple. They raised slogans against the State government, especially over remarks made by Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian on January 18. Cherian said, "while the RSS promoted majority communalism, the Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally of the Congress, was encouraging minority communalism." Meanwhile, BJP’s Yuva Morcha activists protested in Thrissur on the Sabarimala issue. They marched to the District Collector’s office and tried to remove or climb over barricades. Police responded with barricades, water cannons, and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
