Saudi Arabia Tightens Mosque Rules for Ramadan: Outdoor Speakers Limited to Adhan and Iqama Only
January 23, 2026
As Ramadan nears, Saudi Arabia's Islamic Affairs Ministry has confirmed strict mosque rules. The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Sheikh, said outdoor loudspeakers can only be used for Adhan (call to prayer) and Iqama (start of prayer). This applies to all prayers in Ramadan. The rule aims to keep prayers peaceful and reduce noise outside mosques.
A ministry circular issued on Tuesday detailed mosque preparations. It ordered strict following of prayer times per the Umm Al-Qura calendar. It highlighted calling the Isha prayer on time and maintaining the correct gap between Adhan and Iqama.
Mosques must hold iftar meals only in designated courtyards. Water donations should be managed carefully to avoid storage overflow. Caretakers and maintenance teams will enhance cleaning and safety. Women's prayer areas must be given equal attention and readiness.
The ministry said these guidelines will offer worshippers an organized and caring Ramadan experience. The goal is a calm, orderly, and spiritually rich mosque atmosphere. Respect for nearby residents during this busy religious time is also a priority.
