The Tamil Nadu government on Friday, January 23, 2026, announced three new relaxations for jallikattu organisers and participants. This move follows Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s recent visit to Alanganallur, where he watched jallikattu firsthand. The first change is ending online registration for participants. From now on, district administrations will handle registration and organise events locally. An official release stated, "The government is granting compensation to participants if they die during jallikattu events. Therefore, the rule mandating life insurance for tamers will be relaxed." This eases the insurance requirement for those taking part. The government has also removed the need for organisers to provide undertakings on stamp papers. After the announcement, Minister P. Moorthy thanked Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in the State Legislative Assembly for these relaxations, which aim to make organising jallikattu safer and simpler. These new rules will come into effect immediately and are expected to bring relief to the community involved in this traditional sport.
