12-Year-Old Nico Antic Dies After Shark Attack in Sydney Harbour
January 24, 2026
A 12-year-old boy named Nico Antic has died in hospital after a shark attack in Sydney Harbour on January 18. The boy was bitten on both legs while swimming near Shark Beach at Nielsen Park, outside the shark net enclosure. His parents, Lorena and Juan, said, "We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away." They described him as "a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit." Friends tried to save Nico, with one jumping into the water to pull him to safety. Authorities said a bull shark caused the attack. This was the first of four shark bites on the New South Wales coast in 48 hours, including incidents at Dee Why, Manly, and Point Plomer. Experts believe heavy rain flushing dirty water into the ocean increased shark activity. Nearly 30 Sydney beaches were closed after the attacks, and many people stayed out of the water. All beaches reopened before the long weekend, but Manly Beach closed again on Saturday after a shark sighting. A GoFundMe for Nico’s family raised nearly $240,000 as of Saturday afternoon. Kate Barley, mother of a 15-year-old killed by a shark last year, expressed sympathy, saying, "Your precious boy is in our thoughts and prayers." Nico was also part of the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club’s Nippers program and was recognized as the most improved under-11 boy in 2024. Police and hospital teams worked hard to save him, but sadly, Nico succumbed to his injuries.
