Yuvraj Mehta Drowns in Greater Noida as Rescue Delay Sparks Outrage
January 26, 2026
In Greater Noida’s Sector 150, Yuvraj Mehta died after his car fell into a water-filled pit on January 16. The site lacked proper barricades, street lights, and signage. Yuvraj managed to open his car door and called his father from his phone. He shouted for help, climbed onto his car roof, and used his phone’s torch, but rescue teams delayed action for over two hours. The fog was thick, and emergency responders hesitated to enter the water. Despite his efforts, Yuvraj drowned; post-mortem showed death by cardiac arrest and asphyxia due to drowning. His father accused rescue teams of inaction. The area has a history of accidents due to poor infrastructure. Residents had repeatedly complained about waterlogging and unsafe conditions to the Noida Authority, but no action was taken. Public outrage grew online and offline, leading Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to order a Special Investigation Team probe within five days. The CEO of the real estate firm owning the plot was arrested, and two more builders linked to the property were also taken into custody. The Noida Authority was held responsible by the National Green Tribunal for environmental violations that caused water accumulation. Political leaders expressed concern, calling the incident a failure of safety systems. This tragedy spotlights serious lapses by officials and developers in managing urban safety and environmental risks.
