Storm Chandra to Bring Heavy Rain, Snow, and Strong Winds Across UK
January 27, 2026
The Met Office has issued several weather warnings for the UK from late Monday through Tuesday due to Storm Chandra. A 17-hour yellow warning covers rain and snow from midnight Tuesday to 5pm. Amber warnings are in place for strong winds in eastern Northern Ireland and heavy rain in parts of south-west England.
In southern England, the storm will bring persistent and heavy rain, with 30–50mm widely expected and 60–80mm on higher grounds like south Dartmoor. The rain falls on already saturated land, making flooding and disruption likely, especially Tuesday morning. Strong southeasterly winds are forecast as well.
Northern England and Scotland face more snow than rain. The Met Office predicts 2–5cm of snow above 300m, 5–10cm above 400m, and 10–20cm above 500m. This snow could block some high-level routes with drifting snow caused by brisk winds. Strong gusty winds will also add to possible transport issues.
Storm Chandra will affect areas progressively, starting with Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall, and south-west Wales, then moving north through the Irish Sea. Eastern Northern Ireland faces gusts of 60–70mph, possibly up to 75mph at the coast.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen said, “Storm Chandra will bring a range of hazards to the UK through Monday night and Tuesday. Initially strong winds will impact the Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall and southwest Wales which are still vulnerable after Storm Goretti, gusts of 70 to 80mph are possible here. Heavy rain is an additional hazard as it falls on saturated ground in Dorset and southern parts of Devon, Somerset and Cornwall. As Chandra interacts with colder air further north snow becomes a hazard, with 10–20cm of snow possibly accumulating over higher ground in the Pennines, southern Scotland and the Highlands. With a complex spell of weather, it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast and any warnings in your area.”
With bad weather raising the risk of power cuts, British Gas advises households to keep three items ready: a battery-powered or wind-up torch, spare batteries (AA or AAA), and a backup charger for mobile phones. They also suggest a battery-powered radio to stay updated if phones fail. This preparation will help families stay safe and informed during Storm Chandra.
