In Perambalur district, a man named Alaguraja, 30, also known as Kotturaja, was killed in a police encounter early Tuesday, January 27, 2026. He was accused of throwing a country bomb at a police team escorting a prisoner. A special police team had arrested him from Udhagamandalam. During a recovery operation based on his confession, Alaguraja attacked Sub Inspector Shankar and injured him. The inspector fired one shot in self-defense, hitting Alaguraja who died on the way to the hospital. The injured officer was admitted to Perambalur Government Hospital. Police said Alaguraja had several cases against him. Six others have been detained in connection with the case. On January 24, police escorting a history sheeter named Vellakali from Dindigul to Puzhal Central Prison were attacked with country bombs near Perambalur, injuring three officers.
