Massive US Winter Storm Kills 30, Cuts Power to 560,000+ Homes, Disrupts Travel
January 27, 2026
A massive winter storm hit large parts of the US, killing at least 30 people and knocking out power to over 560,000 homes. The storm stretched from the Deep South to the Northeast, dumping more than a foot of snow and causing dangerous ice storms. Major transport routes were shut as school closures and flight cancellations crippled travel. In the South, ice storms caused heavy damage to homes, roads, and power lines. Tennessee and Mississippi faced some of their worst ice in decades, with streets blocked by fallen trees. In New York City, officials found eight people dead outdoors and intensified efforts to bring homeless people to shelter. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, "Just because the storm has passed does not mean that the danger to homeless New Yorkers has passed." At least two people were killed by snowplows, and teenagers died sledding in Arkansas and Texas. A private jet crashed during takeoff in Maine amid the snow, killing seven. Airlines cancelled or delayed over 12,000 flights on Monday. Forecasters warn the cold will continue, with temperatures plunging to minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit in some places. Officials said recovery will take days as communities face ongoing power outages and icy roads.
