Russian Drone Attack Kills Five on Ukrainian Passenger Train, Zelenskyy Calls It Terrorism
January 28, 2026
A Russian drone strike on a passenger train in north-eastern Ukraine has killed five people, prosecutors said. The attack happened near a village in the Kharkiv region on Tuesday. The train was running from Chop, near Ukraine’s western border, to Barvinkove. Photographs showed at least two carriages on fire next to snow-covered tracks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strike "purely terrorism" on Telegram. He said, "In any country, a drone strike on a civilian train would be considered in exactly the same way – purely as terrorism. There is not and cannot be any military purpose in this." Zelenskyy added that such attacks hurt peace efforts and urged allies to increase pressure on Moscow to stop the war. Prosecutors said one drone hit the train directly, while two others struck nearby areas. Zelenskyy stated the train carried over 200 passengers, including 18 in the hit carriage. Earlier, prosecutors mentioned 155 passengers were onboard. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba called the attack by three drones a "direct act of Russian terror." Ukrzaliznytsia chief Oleksandr Pertsovskyi thanked rescue teams and passengers who helped evacuate people. He promised that trains would continue running despite the challenges. "Keeping things moving is becoming more difficult," Pertsovskyi wrote on Facebook. "We are regrouping. There will be additional strict security measures in some places, but even on those most frightening days, we cannot give up." Separately, more than 50 Russian drones launched a barrage on Odesa, killing three and wounding over 30. The regional governor, Oleh Kiper, said among the wounded were a 39-week pregnant woman and two girls. Odesa, a key port city for Ukrainian exports, has faced frequent Russian attacks since the invasion began nearly four years ago.
