A Chinese team will visit Australia to help find a man accused of attacking a baby with hot coffee. China’s Ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, said on Wednesday that investigators will travel to Queensland. The 33-year-old suspect is alleged to have poured a Thermos of hot coffee on nine-month-old Luka at a Brisbane park on August 27, 2024. After the incident, the man fled to China. Luka got severe burns on his chest, neck, and face. He has needed eight surgeries, including skin grafts and laser treatments. Police found the man’s identity quickly and released CCTV photos. But he had already flown to China 12 hours before. Speaking in Canberra, Ambassador Xiao said, "I’m not sure if I should announce this at this moment, but there’s going to be a working group from China coming to Brisbane." He added, "We’re now preparing for the working group to come, so we are serious in addressing this concern, and we’re serious in taking the necessary actions." The Chinese team will cooperate with Australian police to "see what exactly happened, how it happened, and how both sides can work together as a follow-up," Xiao said. Australian Federal Police have been working with Chinese officials since the suspect left Australia on August 31, 2024. There is no extradition treaty between Australia and China. Both the Queensland Police Service and the Australian Federal Police support the visit of the Chinese delegation to Brisbane.
