Hi-tech Labs in Tamil Nadu Schools Stall Due to Maintenance and Internet Problems
January 29, 2026
Hi-tech labs in many Tamil Nadu government high and higher secondary schools have stopped working properly. Maintenance contracts ended in April 2025, and no new contracts have been signed yet. Computers often lack power backup as UPS devices are down. Internet connectivity issues worsen the problem, especially after schools switched to BSNL, which fails to provide service in remote areas. Teachers say no online tests have been held for most of the year, harming students' confidence in computer-based exams. The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Computer Teacher Association called this a serious issue before upcoming practical exams. The government plans to upgrade 885 labs at ₹56 crore in phases and is working with Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation to fix internet problems where BSNL cannot reach. Teachers are urged to contact district coordinators for maintenance help. "The School Education Minister has announced the upgradation of the already established hi-tech labs, which will take place in a phased manner," said Samagra Shiksha Project Director M. Aarthi.
