China Executes 11 Myanmar Mafia Members Linked to Brutal Scam Operations
January 30, 2026
China has swiftly executed 11 members of a notorious mafia family from north-eastern Myanmar. These members belonged to the Ming family, one of four clans controlling Laukkaing in Myanmar's Shan state since 2009. The families rose to power after a military operation cleared ethnic insurgents. They shifted from drug production to casinos and online scams, targeting mainly Chinese victims. Torture and imprisonment were routine in these scam compounds. The most infamous site, Crouching Tiger Villa, was run by the Ming family. In October 2023, guards killed several Chinese nationals during an escape attempt, prompting China to act. The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), with China’s approval, recaptured Laukkaing and vowed to end the scam business. The heads of the four families were detained, and 60 relatives handed over to Chinese police. Ming Xuechang, the Ming family patriarch, reportedly killed himself after capture. Interrogations revealed violent crimes committed to instill fear. The Chinese government is also targeting similar scam operations in Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar by pressing for extraditions and bringing citizens home for trial. Despite pressure, scam businesses continue to adapt and remain a major issue in the region.
