J&K Tableau at Republic Day Faces Criticism; Artist Balwant Thakur Defends Design
January 30, 2026
The Jammu and Kashmir tableau at the Republic Day parade won second place but came under fire for showing "foreign Muslim and European influences." Artist Balwant Thakur, who designed the tableau, called the criticism "unfair and unwarranted" and said art should not be a platform for politics.
He explained that the tableau lasted only about 45 seconds and focused on handicrafts like Pashmina weaving, walnut wood carving, copperware, and Basohli paintings. It also featured a large houseboat and performances of Dogra and other local folk dances.
Balwant Thakur said the National Selection Committee decided which crafts to display, preferring those with national and international recognition. He added, "There is no regional representation in tableaus. Themes are proposed by States but finalized by a National Committee."
However, BJP leader Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo criticized the tableau for showcasing foreign elements like the Samovar and houseboats, saying these do not represent Kashmir's ancient culture. He called for an inquiry by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
In response, Mr. Thakur urged people not to dilute this "moment of pride" with controversies made for publicity. The tableau highlighted the rich handicraft traditions of the entire Jammu and Kashmir region.
