Karnataka HC Confirms 1994 Land Acquisition for APMC Bengaluru, Orders Compensation
January 31, 2026
A Division Bench of Karnataka High Court has upheld the 1994 notifications acquiring about 270 acres of land from the Jamanlal Bajaj Seva Trust. The land was acquired for the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Bengaluru to build a mega market. Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Poonacha said, "The appellants have failed in demonstrating that the order of the single judge is in any manner erroneous and liable to be interfered with by this court." The bench dismissed appeals filed by the trust against the single judge's February 3, 2025 verdict, which had rejected petitions from 1999 and 2000 challenging the land acquisition. The land was located in Srigandhada Kaval and Herohalli villages, Bengaluru North taluk. Notifications for acquiring around 170 acres and 100 acres were issued between 1994 and 1999. The case involved many legal rounds before the land tribunal, High Court, and Supreme Court. The bench also supported the single judge's order to pay the trust compensation agreed upon in a 1999 meeting. The compensation will carry 12% interest per year from the compensation award date.
