The 18th-century Mah Laqa Bai Stepwell was inaugurated on Saturday at the Osmania University College of Education after a two-year restoration. The project involved Osmania University, the State government, Infosys Foundation, and voluntary groups like MAHE, The Rainwater Project, and SAHE. The stepwell was originally built by Urdu poetess and royal advisor Mah Laqa Chanda Bai, serving as a water source and cultural hub. Kalpana Ramesh, leader of the restoration technical team, credited student volunteers and NGOs for rescuing the stepwell from neglect. Restoration included clearing debris, strengthening its structure, and using local materials like lime plaster to preserve its look. This renovation also helps recharge groundwater, promoting a sustainable water future on campus. At the opening event, Paramparaa Foundation staged a classical dance show, Murta-Maheshwara, using the restored stepwell as a dramatic backdrop, reviving its historic role as a space for art. Officials present included Ravi Boudipally from Infosys Foundation, Registrar G. Naresh Reddy, OSD S. Jithendra Kumar Naik, Principal Rabindranath Murthy, and District Collector Harichandana Dasari. Dasari called the restoration “truly remarkable,” praising the collective work and its example of heritage conservation linked to sustainable water management.
