Donald Trump is demanding $1 billion in damages from Harvard University amid a fierce dispute. This clash follows the US president's administration backing down from an earlier $200 million demand. Trump blamed Harvard for "feeding a lot of nonsense" to the New York Times in a post on Truth Social. Trump officials accuse Harvard of not doing enough to stop antisemitism during pro-Palestinian protests, a charge rejected by Harvard. Harvard has been a main target in President Trump’s campaign against "woke" and "radical left" ideas on US campuses. In April last year, Trump cut about $2 billion in research grants and froze federal funding to Harvard. The university fought back, suing the administration and arguing that no government should control private universities’ teaching, admissions, or research choices. A federal court later overturned Trump’s funding cuts, ruling that they violated Harvard’s free speech rights. The White House promised to challenge that court decision quickly, stating that Harvard is still "ineligible for grants in the future." Before Trump's latest claim, talks between Harvard and the government aimed to restore some federal funding. But Trump’s Monday announcement ended talks. He wrote, "We are now seeking One Billion Dollars in damages, and want nothing further to do, into the future, with Harvard University." He accused Harvard of "serious and heinous illegalities" but did not specify the details. Trump has also threatened to take away Harvard’s tax-exempt status and seize patents from federally funded research. Meanwhile, other Ivy League schools like Columbia, Penn, and Brown avoided court by reaching deals with Trump to keep their funding intact.
