The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) has issued an urgent alert for the Makkah region. Starting February 4, 2026, strong winter storms will bring heavy rain, hail, and winds up to 60 km/h. This unusual weather is a sharp change from the usual dry heat. Meteorologists predict moderate to heavy thunderstorms across Makkah and nearby areas. Residents and pilgrims have already spotted dark clouds over the Grand Mosque, signaling a rare powerful storm. The NCM warns that winds could cause dust storms, cutting visibility to near zero on highways and open areas. Rain intensity may exceed 10mm per hour, raising the risk of sudden flash floods in valleys and city lowlands. Hail is expected, and people are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid parking in open spaces to prevent damage. Along the Red Sea coast, including Jeddah and Rabigh, rough seas with waves over two meters are likely. Safety agencies in Makkah have increased readiness. Authorities ask people to avoid crossing wadis (valleys) prone to swift flooding. Pilgrims should be cautious during rituals and follow security staff instructions. Motorists are warned to avoid roads during peak storms to prevent accidents due to water and strong winds. This storm system also affects other parts of Saudi Arabia like Riyadh, Jazan, Asir, and Al Baha, with varying rain and storms. In Makkah, expect short, intense showers with thunder and hail. Heavy rains may cause local flooding and slippery roads, so caution is essential. The NCM stresses everyone remains alert and follows safety advice throughout the storm period.
