A 45-year-old woman, K. Padma, was hurt when part of the ceiling fell on her at the paediatric ICU of Government District Headquarters Hospital in Tirupattur on Wednesday. Padma was sleeping near her six-month-old granddaughter, Sri Nandini, who is being treated for fever and cold in the old hospital building. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when the false ceiling and cement roof above it peeled off and fell on her head. Hospital staff quickly helped Padma and treated her injuries. "Around 5 a.m., I was alerted about the incident. Immediately, we initiated steps to shift all six paediatric patients in the ward to a new building in the hospital. PWD officials are currently working to repair the damaged roof in the ward," said K. Sivakumar, Chief Medical Officer. A video of the incident went viral on social media, causing public concern. Padma said, "I was in a state of shock when the cement plastering fell on me. Had it fallen on the patients in the paediatric ward, the loss would have been severe. The district administration should ensure patients’ safety at government facilities." Officials blamed the old, dilapidated building, constructed in 1974, despite renovations in 2022 that added a first floor and converted a former COVID-19 ICU into the paediatric ICU. The old building holds four wards with at least eight beds each and also has a camp office and psychiatric care unit. A new ₹56 crore building with an advanced paediatric ICU exists but was not operational due to medical equipment delays. After the accident, children were shifted to the ICU in the new building for safety.
