Allahabad HC Acquits 100-Year-Old Murder Accused After 40+ Years
February 5, 2026
The Allahabad High Court acquitted Dhami Ram, nearly 100 years old, who was accused of a 1982 murder case. The court noted more than 40 years have passed since he challenged his life sentence. A division bench of Justices Chandra Dhari Singh and Sanjiv Kumar said the long delay and Dhami Ram's old age were important to grant relief.
The murder happened in 1982 over a land dispute. Three accused were Maiku, Satti Din, and Dhami Ram. Maiku absconded, and Satti Din and Dhami Ram were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1984 by the Hamirpur sessions court. Dhami Ram was released on bail the same year. Satti Din died during the appeal, leaving Dhami Ram the only appellant.
Since then, Dhami Ram remained on bail. The High Court said his bail bond is now discharged. The acquittal was based on the merits, mainly the prosecution's failure to prove charges beyond reasonable doubt.
The court also said the anxiety, uncertainty, and social harm Dhami Ram suffered for decades cannot be ignored when deciding justice. Dhami Ram's lawyer said he is about 100 years old and had only urged Maiku to fire at the victim.
