February 5, 2026
The Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address on February 5, 2026, without a reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Opposition protested loudly as Speaker Om Birla rejected their amendments and put the motion to a voice vote. Despite slogans and protests, the motion was approved. The Speaker adjourned the session till 2 p.m. due to continuing disruptions. Earlier, on February 4, 2026, women Opposition MPs protested by rushing towards the Prime Minister's seat, leading to the adjournment of the House. PM Modi was not present that day. Opposition members protested against the US trade deal and a book by former Army chief M.M. Naravane. Meanwhile, Congress recalled a 2004 incident when then PM Manmohan Singh was stopped by the BJP from replying to the Motion of Thanks. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted a video of Singh's 2005 speech, highlighting the delay and difficulties in delivering the reply then. The current disruptions echo past challenges in floor proceedings.
